ENGAGEMENT RING GUIDELINES: WHEN AND HOW TO WEAR THEM

October 28, 2021

As we all know, engagement rings are a very important part of the proposal process. After all, no engagement would ever be complete without it. In fact, the lack of a ring during one’s betrothal period is often seen as a major social faux pas as it would bring your partner’s love and commitment for you into question. As such, the importance of the engagement ring can never be understated or underestimated. However, for those who are engaged, they also tend to wonder if there are any guidelines that they should follow when it comes to wearing an engagement ring.

In this post, the master jewellers of Vella Diamonds discuss when and how you should wear your engagement ring.

When to Wear and When to Remove Your Engagement Ring

Of course, as expected, you’ll be wearing your engagement ring during your engagement period. It is an accessory you’ll want to show off to your social circle, after all. However, even after a person is married, they’re still more than free to wear their engagement rings on a daily basis or even just for special occasions, especially when the ring fits your outfit for the event. But while no one is stopping you from wearing your engagement ring every day, you also need to know that there are some instances when you should remove your engagement ring.

For example, jewellery pros strongly recommend that you remove your engagement ring when you’re doing any sort of physical activity like exercising or swimming. This is because in the case of the latter, you might accidentally lose your ring in the pool or the ocean if you decide to swim while wearing it. For the former, meanwhile, the shape of the ring might change if it’s not made of a durable metal such as tungsten or titanium.

Cooking and cleaning are other instances when you should remove your engagement ring as the harsh chemicals you use for cleaning might damage the ring and its stone and setting. For cooking, meanwhile, it’s best that you remove the ring as germs and bacteria can become lodged in the setting and transfer to your food, creating a health hazard for yourself and those who are eating it.

Finally, you should also remove your ring when you’re performing any form of hygiene task such as showering, moisturizing, and primping. According to experts, if you wear your ring in the shower and you aren’t careful, it might slip off and fall down the drain. Alternatively, soaps can also dull or scratch the stone’s finish. Cosmetic items used for moisturizing and primping, meanwhile, can easily affect your engagement ring’s appearance and as such, it’s best that you also remove it during these times.

How to Wear Your Engagement Ring

Believe it or not, there is no right or wrong way to wear engagement rings. However, depending on where you are, there are a few traditional ways one can wear their betrothal ring. For instance, in western countries, an engagement ring is often worn on the left ring finger. This is due to the legend of the Vena Amoris, or the Vein of Love, that can be traced all the way back to ancient times. In this legend, it’s stated that there is a vein in your left ring finger that goes all the way back to your heart, which is the center of emotions such as love.

On the other hand, in countries like Russia, Germany, Norway, and India, the engagement ring is often worn on the right ring finger instead of the left. While this is often attributed to their belief that the Vena Amoris is located on the right hand, this is also because their cultures usually considered the left hand as “unlucky”.

But while everyone knows that engagement rings are usually worn on the left ring finger, some also tend to wonder where they should wear the engagement ring once they’re married. Again, this depends; if your wedding ring happens to match your engagement ring, then by all means, continue wearing it on your left hand. Alternatively, however, if your rings do not match, you can also switch things up and move the engagement ring to your right hand instead. But if that still isn’t to your taste, then consider removing the engagement ring altogether, keep it in a safe space and only wear them on special occasions.
