7 WAYS YOU CAN GET YOUR PARTNER’S RING SIZE

July 22, 2021

Often, proposals are affairs that are kept in secret until the last minute. If you intend to propose to your partner, you’ll be doing a lot of planning without letting them know what you’re up to. From canvassing for engagement rings to making reservations at a restaurant or looking for a place to propose in, everything will have to be kept under wraps. Otherwise, the surprise will be ruined and the romance will be greatly diminished when you propose. Unfortunately, thanks to all the secrecy that goes in the planning of a proposal, some people are often faced with a dilemma that many others experience: getting your partner’s ring size. Luckily enough, however, while obtaining your partner’s ring size in secret can be challenging, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s impossible.

Here are the seven ways you can obtain your partner’s ring size.

  1. Borrow One of Their Rings

If you’re stumped on how to get your partner’s ring size to get an accurate engagement ring, one way you can obtain it is by rummaging around their jewellery box to find a ring that they still wear every now and then. If you can find a spare ring of theirs that you know fits them perfectly, you can take that ring to the jewellers so they can estimate your partner’s ring size with the ring that you brought. If you intend to use this method, however, avoid grabbing a ring that they use as a daily accessory. That way, they won’t even notice that it was missing in the first place, allowing your plans to remain secret as much as possible.

  1. Use the Soap Method

Of course, stealing your partner’s jewellery isn’t always doable, especially if they only have the one ring that they use. However, don’t despair: you can still get their ring size despite this with the soap method. To get your partner’s ring size with this method, simply borrow the ring they’re using for a moment when it’s off their finger and quickly press it into a bar of soap. By doing so, the ring will leave an impression that you can then take to the jeweller’s. If you don’t have a spare bar of soap for the moment, you can always use a piece of soft wax instead. With this method at your disposal, it should make shopping for engagement rings much easier.

  1. Measure Their Finger

On the other hand, if your partner is a heavy sleeper and you have the stealth of a ninja and the dexterity of a surgeon, you can also consider measuring their finger while they sleep. When doing this, you need to wrap a piece of thread or string around your partner’s ring finger, mark the string’s length with a piece of tape or marker, and then bring that same string to the jeweller’s. Again, however, be sure to be quick, quiet, and cautious as much as possible when employing this method to prevent your partner from waking up and accidentally spoiling your surprise.

  1. Ask Their Friends and Family for Help

Believe it or not, your partner’s friends and family could be the key to solving your ring size dilemma, making shopping for engagement rings a breeze. Remember; they know your partner better than anyone else and therefore, it wouldn’t hurt to ask them for help. If you intend to turn to your partner’s friends and family, start with their parents first. Ask them if they bought your lover a ring as a gift in the past and if so, ask what size it was. If they haven’t, you can then turn to their friends and ask them to subtly question your partner about their ring size so they could obtain it for you instead. This allows you to preserve your proposal plans and have it remain a secret.

  1. Err on the Side of Caution

    – Alternatively, if none of the aforementioned methods are doable, jewellers recommend that you err on the side of caution instead and purchase a ring that you know is a bit larger than their size. That way, you can still propose with this ring and simply have it adjusted at the jeweller’s in the future if it really is too big for them.

  1. Just Ask

    – Finally, if you have no intention about keeping your proposal a secret in the first place or you and your partner have been together so long that a proposing is just a formality at this point, you can always just ask them for their ring size. Sure, it’ll somewhat diminish the romance of your proposal since they’ll know about it but at least, you can get them a ring of the right size off the bat instead of needing a jeweller to have it resized in the future.
